are lagottos hypoallergenic?
While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, the Lagotto Romagnolo’s dense, curly coat sheds very little—if at all. This low-shedding quality makes the breed an excellent option for individuals with allergies, as it reduces the spread of dander and hair in the home.
However, because allergen sensitivity varies from person to person, we always recommend spending time with the breed before making a commitment. Regular grooming and bathing also play a key role in keeping allergens under control and maintaining the health of the Lagotto’s unique coat.what can i expect out of my adult lagotto?
When fully grown, Lagotto Romagnolos typically stand between 16 and 19 inches at the shoulder and weigh 24 to 35 pounds. With proper care, they often enjoy a long lifespan of 15 to 17 years.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Lagottos are known for being exceptionally affectionate with their families, gentle with young children, and social with other dogs. Their temperament is balanced, making them a wonderful companion in both active and relaxed households.
Lagottos have an excellent sense of smell and strong work ethic, which makes them not only skilled in scent detection but also easy to train. They are intelligent, eager to please, and thrive on mental stimulation and structured activity.
With the right environment, training, and care, your adult Lagotto will be a loyal, loving, and energetic member of your family.
what about hips?
All puppies are born with normal hips, but their joints are delicate and require proper care during development. Factors such as being raised on slippery surfaces, being overfed or given low-quality food, or being neutered too early can increase the risk of hip dysplasia.
To support healthy joint development, it's important to avoid overexerting your puppy—especially before their growth plates have fully closed. Activities like jumping from heights, excessive stair use, or high-impact play should be avoided during the early months.
spaying and neutering?
At SkyeBrooks Lagottos, we do not offer breeding rights. All of our clients are required to sign a spay/neuter agreement. This policy helps preserve the integrity of the lines we’ve carefully developed through rigorous health testing and responsible breeding, while also preventing unintended litters.
While there is ongoing discussion about the ideal timing for spaying or neutering, we recommend waiting until your dog has reached puberty to support optimal physical development. Our contract requires that puppies be spayed or neutered between 12 and 18 months of age.
